Giving Back in April

With this first Friday of April brings another Giving Back charity.  April marks the first full month of spring and the month we celebrate Earth Day 2013 (April 22).  Since Punxsutawney Phil's spring arrival prediction left us scratching our heads, cabin fever is certainly setting in for some. This month's charity will inspire you to get outside.

American Rivers is the leading organization working to protect and restore the nation’s rivers and streams. Rivers connect us to each other, nature, and future generations. Since 1973, American Rivers has fought to preserve these connections, helping protect and restore more than 150,000 miles of rivers through advocacy efforts, on-the-ground projects, and the annual release of America’s Most Endangered Rivers®.

This is a much larger charity than what is normally featured here.  I chose to incorporate an environmental cause that most of us could relate to.  The question was which one to go with: forest or rivers. I'm a water girl so I went with the rivers. American Rivers helps communities improve the different aspects related to rivers and water.  Have you ever floated down a river on a lazy day?  Have you ever had water restrictions in your community?  Have you ever had a cup of tap water?  Have your local streets flooded after a rain storm?  Chances are you answered "yes" to at least one of these questions.  {If not, I highly recommend the lazy river float.  My heartbeat just went down thinking about it.}  American Rivers works hard to preserve our ability to be able to do all of the above.

With "outdoor" weather slowly approaching, if it hasn't already in your area, our waterways become fantastic resources for vacation spots or staycations.  A great way to teach our kids (and ourselves) about service to each other is to join or organize a National River Cleanup®.  Here is a link to their FAQ in case that sounds like a great cure for your cabin fever or service project or just a great way to spend a day with friends.  They also have a photo contest for the before and after pictures of your project.

Get social with them and become involved to preserve these beautiful resources.  Visit them on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.  To support this cause, click here.  Be safe and Happy Vacationing!
